چکیده

We consider numerical approximations of a quasistatic problem modeling the sliding frictional contact with wear between a viscoelastic body and a rigid moving foundation. The contact is modeled with the Coulomb's law of dry friction and the wear is described by a version of Archard's law. The variational formulation of the problem consists of a nonlinear evolutionary equation coupled with a time-dependent variational inequality with nonlinear diierential operators, which has a unique solution under certain assumptions on the given data. We derive error estimates for both spatially semi-discrete and fully discrete schemes to solve the problem. Under appropriate regularity assumptions on the exact solution, we establish optimal order error estimates.

Quasistatic Frictional Contact and Wear of a Beam

A problem of frictional contact between an elastic beam and a moving foundation and the resulting wear of the beam is considered. The process is assumed to be quasistatic, the contact is modeled with normal compliance, and the wear is described by the Archard law. Existence and uniqueness of the weak solution for the problem is proved using the theory of strongly monotone operators and the Cauc...

General theory of frictional heating with application to rubber friction.

The energy dissipation in the contact regions between solids in sliding contact can result in high local temperatures which may strongly effect friction and wear. This is the case for rubber sliding on road surfaces at speeds above 1 mm s(-1). We derive equations which describe the frictional heating for solids with arbitrary thermal properties. The theory is applied to rubber friction on road ...

Phase transition of the dry friction between crystalline surfaces induced by normal load

A major source of energy dissipation and surface wear is the kinetic friction at the interfaces of sliding bodies. Traditionally, on a macroscopic scale, this undesirable effect is reduced with lubricating the surfaces by introducing oil into their interface. An interesting phenomenon, called superlubricity, has been reported on a nanometer scale where dry (without lubricant oil) fruition and w...

Interaction of thermal contact resistance and frictional heating in thermoelastic instability

Thermoelastic contact problems can posess non-unique and/or unstable steady-state solutions if there is frictional heating or if there is a pressure-dependent thermal contact resistance at the interface. These two effects have been extensively studied in isolation, but their possible interaction has never been investigated. In this paper, we consider an idealized problem in which a thermoelasti...

Finite-element modeling of dry sliding wear in metals

This paper is concerned with the calibration and validation of a finite-element model of dry sliding wear in metals. The model is formulated within a Lagrangian framework capable of accounting for large plastic deformations and history-dependent material behavior. We resort to continuous adaptive meshing as a means of eliminating deformation-induced element distortion, and of resolving fine fea...
